Since 1927, our Swedish heritage and human-centric focus have shaped who we are and our philosophy; to help people make their life easier and more enjoyable while keeping them safe. As such, our founders, Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larson emphasised that everything we do at Volvo Cars must start with people and the guiding principle behind everything we make at Volvo, is and must remain safety. On the 14th of April, 1927, the first Volvo production car, the 2.0L car named ÖV4 rolled out of the Gothenburg production plant. Volvo has had a unique Swedish approach to car design, setting out to satisfy human needs and in the process driving desire. This approach can be traced in our earliest luxury cars to the PV444 launched in 1944; this family sedan was Volvo’s first real big success. From the beautiful Amazon of the 50s and 60s to the iconic P1800 and onto today’s state of the art XC90 and S90 and concept design, our aim has always been to design premium cars that make life easier and less complicated.

Our human-centric focus is what makes us different from other car companies, and it is at the heart of everything we create. This is why Volvo Cars are ‘Designed Around You’. Volvo Cars’ vision is to stand out from the crowd by delivering a distinct and sophisticated car experience built on our own, unique Scandinavian profile. Our mission is to make people’s life less complicated while strengthening our commitment to safety, quality and the environment. Volvo has been a pioneer in the field of technological and safety innovations and has been making cars safer since 1959. Some of our innovations have literally changed the world—ever since Nils Bohlin introduced the three-point safety belt in 1959, an estimated one million lives have been saved because Volvo cars waived its patent rights for other brands to adopt this important innovation. Volvo’s innovation in automotive safety is renowned and respected the world over, especially our achievements in crash safety for all occupants including children. Volvo is also focusing on preventative safety in all driving conditions and leadership in Autonomous driving. Volvo has a bold vision: Vision 2020. By 2020 no-one should be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo. Introduction of Drive-E powertrains means more power with less fuel consumption and Volvo is leading the CO2-reduction race. Being sustainable is our heritage. The Designed Around You, human-centric perspective is what sustainability is to us. Quality in Volvo Cars equals Customer Satisfaction. Volvo’s strategy for Connected Strategy aims to make life for our customers more enjoyable, easier and saving time for them. The strategy contains 3 pillars: Drive time productivity, connected life and benefits of big data. Volvo leads the field in autonomous driving with the Drive Me project, the world’s first and largest large scale pilot. Volvo Cars is moving rapidly towards the aim of placing 100 self-driving cars in the hands of customers on selected roads around Gothenburg, Sweden by 2017 and the project is in place as per plans to achieve sustainable mobility and ensure a crash-free future.

Volvo Cars produces premium-segment car models in three versions: Sedans (S60, S90), Versatile estates (V40, V60) and Cross Country vehicles (XC60, XC90).
